BOLLYGUM PARK

where the story comes to life!

The STORY and RELEVANCE
to the KINGLAKE RANGES

The Bollygum Story has deeply engaged both children and adults
among the Kinglake Ranges community.
The passion for the story is strong because the story truly resonates
with so many of the issues we face as a community.

A generation of local children have now been enamoured by and reflected upon
the Bollygum story’s relevance to the Kinglake Ranges.

Like little possum, most of us are
migrants or new settlers
.

Bollygum is set in a rain forest setting with
flora and fauna and a rural-urban-fringe
setting just like the Kinglake Ranges
.

The Bollygum Story

Little Possum is thrown out of her cosy city roof home and dumped into the dark and unfamiliar forest of Bollygum bushland. Miles from friends and family she is surrounded by difference and overwhelmed by isolation. Wombat finds and cares for little possum and takes her to other animals residing in his community who can help.

Little possum is introduced to the most extraordinary and unfamiliar characters, like goanna and platypus. Despite their oddness, possum discovers that it is their combined knowledge and skill which becomes the source of her solution.
The chance meeting of these animals, leads them all on an adventure which takes each of them into unfamiliar territory. They are confronted by their worst fears, but supported by friends, (like wombat when his life was threatened by the Rumbles), they discover courage and the importance of friendship.

The journey highlights the differences between characters and deepens their appreciation for their individual and different talents for the many benefits of inclusion. At the end of the story, all of the animals come together to party in the bush.

Little possum migrates to Bollygum with his city family. There is much joy and celebration, but this is where the story telling really begins. The story telling unites the Bollygum community and like the fire they share, it brightens the dark sky and builds a stronger sense of identity, place, relationships and celebration within the Bollygum community.

We have an opportunity to create a unique themed park
that will attract tourism to the Kinglake Ranges.

Mary Jeavons Landscape Architects have developed plans
which truly capture the essence of the Bollygum book.

The characters of the book are our own native animals that live with us in Kinglake.
The children can identify with these animals with the schools incorporating ‘Bollygum’ into the school curriculum engaging our youth in learning about the animals’ habitat and our environment.
